EU drivers visiting or living in the UK after EU Exit
Arrangements for EU licence holders who are visiting or living in the UK WILL NOT CHANGE.
Update 19.10.2020. The UK Govt website now mentions:
Until the end of the transition period, you can still use your Spanish licence in the UK for short visits or exchange it for a UK licence without taking a test.
These rules may change from 1 January 2021.
Visitors with EU driving licences will not need an International Driving Permit to drive in the UK, a valid driving licence is sufficient.
EU licence holders that settle as residents in the UK can drive in the UK for a limited period of time, depending on their age. Until 70th birthday or for three years, whichever is the longest period.
E.g. EU licence holder under 67 years old can drive till 70th birthday (so could be up to 10 years, corresponding with max. validity of photocard licence), unless licence expires before that date.
E.g. EU licence holder of 68 or older can drive for 3 years, unless licence expires before that date.
For European Union licence holders who passed their test in the EU or EEA, the UK will continue to exchange their licence.
EU licence holders who passed their test outside the EU or EEA have restrictions on licence exchange. As such, they may need to take a test to obtain a UK licence and they will only be able to drive on their EU licence for 12 months, or until it expires, whichever comes first.
