Full Information

Translation from the Spanish website.

“ Progressive opening of the borders from June 21.

The President has also advanced that next Thursday the Government will present a boost plan for another basic sector severely damaged by the crisis, tourism, which accounts for more than 12% of GDP and Spanish employment. The initiative, designed together with the representatives of the sector and the autonomous communities, will promote renewal, environmental sustainability and the improvement of employment conditions, always from the maximum health security.

In order to consolidate Spain’s leadership in this field, the reopening of borders is essential, Sánchez said, recalling that just 35 years ago the Schengen Treaty was signed, which opened the way to European integration. The president has indicated that, according to the criteria of the European Union, the requests of the sector and the good evolution of the health emergency, Spain will lift border controls with the countries of the European Union and of the Schengen area on June 21, coinciding with the end of the state of alarm.

Sánchez has specified that the controls on the internal land borders with Portugal will be maintained until June 30, “as they have requested us”; The reopening will be held on July 1 in an event in which the King, the Spanish President, the President of the Portuguese Republic and the Portuguese Prime Minister will participate.

As of July 1, the president added, the borders with third countries, outside the Schengen area, will be gradually opened, with three requirements: having an epidemiological situation analogous or better to that of the EU; assume certain sanitary conditions at origin, route and destination, and act with reciprocity”.

We expect further details on Wednesday or Thursday of this coming week.

The British Embassy in Spain has tweeted today that the Spanish government have confirmed to them that the UK is included in the date of June 21.
