As the DVLA has abolished the paper tax disc in October 2014 and has moved on to a strictly electronic registration of vehicle tax, it is difficult for foreign authorities to check whether you have paid your tax.
According to the gov.uk website the DVLA have informed the EU about the disappearance of the paper disk, but we would advise you not to depend on that information to have come through at each and every Guardia office in Spain and, when travelling abroad, to bring proof of payment of the vehicle tax, like a bank slip, to avoid your vehicle being impounded.
