Pick Ups, Lorry or Car as per Spanish Regulations?

A new ´Instrucción´ from the DGT/Trafico explains that until now Pick Ups were considered to be Lorries, but as of this month they will be included in the Reglamento de Vehiculos as a separate category, thus following the European Directive from 2007 that did foresee a separate category for pick ups of a total weight up to 3.500 kgs.

So as of now pick ups do no longer have to follow the sometimes limiting ´lorry rules´ with regards to circulation (max. speed, prohibition to make use of lanes in contrary direction, overtaking restrictions etc.), but will be considered ´turismos´ so regular vehicles.

Please note that depending on the construction specs, they could still be subject to ´lorry rules´ with regards to ITV frequency, tax etc. when registered as ´lorry´ in the Registro de Vehiculos.
