Pensioner Couples and Claiming Healthcare with S1

Whilst the UK and other EU countries will provide an S1 to cover healthcare in Spain for a pensioner and spouse, it is important to be aware that when the dependent spouse also reaches pensionable age, they should apply for the S1 in their own right. With the form go to the INSS and apply. By not doing so will mean that the INSS will eventually remove the healthcare cover from spouse when reaching pensionable age.

The S1 How to Use it

Please note that pre April 2012 residents can apply at their social security office INSS for healthcare cover under the Spanish NHS. The Social Security will ask for the legislation letter. Please use those keywords to find information on our website.

Depending on the price of healthcare you need privately you may wish to pay into the NHS at €60 a month before you reach the age of 65. This does not cover prescriptions or prosthesis.

For those in the Valencia and Barcelona region regardless of date of residency could apply directly for a healthcare card.
This because their regional laws state healthcare for all.
