All citizens who arrive in Spain intending to reside, should within 90 days apply for a registration certificate. To apply one of the requisites is the registration on the town halls register ‘the padron’ (Census).
For those whose parents will be joining them, the suggestion is that they register immediately. There is a ‘dependency law´ in Spain. It is up to the social services from the town hall who will advise and provide this service to those that meet the requirement. Besides the need to be legally resident in Spain, the citizen must have been registered on the padron for at least five years.
Those who may need assistance to remain independent in their home, meals, nursing, home help and more, will be able to make an application to their social services. The same rules apply for entering into a care home for the elderly run by the state.
Five years registration on the padron is also a requisite for those applying for disability pensions.
There are other benefits (registration of ten years) such as applying for a non contributory pension if needed and the applicant meets the criteria. Further information on this and disability pensions on the website.
