ITV/MOT FAQs

This is a computer translation from the Spanish version.

We thank Veisa for this information. Updated with info from the RD 920/2017 from the 23rd of October, coming into force 20.5.2018.

Novelty from above mentioned Royal Decree: vehicles that are imported do NOT need to pass ITV inspection if the equivalent inspection from the country where the vehicle was matriculated before, is still valid, according to the test intervals that would be obligatory for a vehicle of same type and age, matriculated in Spain. This in accordance with the EU Directive on this subject.

The same is true for changes of ownership.

Choice of ITV station is free, anywhere in Spain, no longer limited to your own autonomous region, for any kind of test or re-test.

For the ´techies´, here is a link to the most up to date ITV Manual, dated February 2018.

When should we take vehicle for ITV.

The periodicity with which a vehicle must pass the inspection is set out in article 6 of Royal Decree 2042/1994, of October 14, which regulates the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (BOE nº 275 of November 17, 1994), Partially amended by Royal Decree 711/2006, of June 9, (BOE No. 147 of June 21, 2006). The first inspection must be carried out when it is established, according to the type of vehicle and the date of the first registration of the same. The successive inspections will be recorded both on your inspection card and on the last inspection report issued by the ITV centre, and its frequency is also established in these Royal Decrees.

Update: as of 20.5.2018 you can take your vehicle to its ITV inspection up to 1 month before renewal date, without losing the original date for the next year (so if inspections yearly, then up to 13 months). The date on which the vehicle passes the test is the one that counts, so if it doesn´t pass the first time and you offer for re-test after the original renewal date, one full year is added (if inspections yearly).

How can I get an appointment?
The appointment system is designed so that the client can select the day and time he wants to pass the inspection, but always depending on the availability of the station’s agenda.

When you go without an appointment to an ITV station, the usual procedure is to request a ticket B (without appointment) at the ticket kiosks. But you must know that the fact of obtaining such a ticket does not guarantee the provision of the service, it only keeps the shift in the event that there is any annulment of appointment or generates some availability on time.

In any case, all our stations have free toll-free numbers available to those interested to make an appointment.

What documentation do I need to submit for my inspection?
To carry out the inspection it is necessary to present the vehicle registration card and the vehicle inspection card. These documents must be the originals of the vehicle, copies of them will never be admitted, even if they are certified, as you know, the ITV card must be stamped with each of its periodic reviews.

What should I keep in mind before conducting my inspection?
During the technical inspection that will be done to your vehicle, the mandatory control of emissions of gases will be made.

Therefore, before entering the inspection line, you must carry out the following checks:

Check the engine oil level. With the engine stopped, check that the oil level is between the maximum and minimum levels indicated on the dipstick. If this is not the case, fill with the right oil until you get it.
Purge the exhaust system. To do this, start the engine and perform 2 or 3 accelerations thoroughly, with intervals of 30 seconds.
Check that the engine is hot. To do this, keep the engine at about 2,500 rpm if it is a light vehicle, and at about 1,500 rpm if it is a heavy vehicle, until the radiator fan begins to operate. Once the fan is running, the engine can be idle until it enters the inspection line.

If you have purchased a van, which is valid for the transport of both persons and goods, the frequency of inspection, as established by Royal Decree 2042/1994, of October 14, is the strictest of both modalities, as transport of Goods, although you as if it were a tourism.

In certain vehicles the change of use is possible, if the vehicle is approved for it. You can check the question: “How can I reclassify my vehicle?”.

Why should we do ITV?
The widespread use of the car has caused a high number of traffic accidents, to which must be added the environmental degradation it generates and the large amount of energy it consumes.

Between 10 and 24% of traffic accidents are due to mechanical failures, this percentage being lower in those countries where the technical inspection of vehicles is carried out. Thanks to ITV hundreds of lives are saved and noise and emissions of pollutants harmful to health and the environment are reduced.
