Disability - How to Start Assessment In Spain?

First of all, your disability accreditation from abroad, won´t be recognised here in Spain. To be able to make use of services or benefits available in Spain, you´ll have to have your disability assessed through the Spanish Social Security system. First port of call would be your GP and a visit to Social Services in your Town to help you with the forms and explain the procedure. Be prepared for a lengthy process.

One of our members has completed the procedure and this is what she wrote about it on our group recently.

¨Start with local social worker, probably at local town hall. Process is very time consuming with many documents & reports required. We needed copies of all ‘informes’ from hospital consultants, lists of drugs taken, report from GP, latest tax return, residencia etc etc plus completed from provided by social worker. It took 6 months to get through the process once a permanent social.worker took it on. Included home visits by specialist social worker & local social worker, then a visit to Almeria for a session with a specialist social worker & a psychologist. Assessment outcome was in form of percentage disability, – Homecare started within 4 weeks. Process is thorough & threshold high, unlike the UK.¨

Please note that with regards to disability pensions, there are 2 kinds, contributive and non-contributive. Info on the latter on our website, Library section. Or click HERE for direct access.

Info on both, on the Seguridad Social website. Link HERE.

If you are in receipt of a disability pension from the UK, this info from our website might be of interest to you.

You might be entitled to other benefits from the UK, like Attendance Allowance. More info HERE.

If you feel you might benefit from a ´blue badge´ to enable you to park in those spaces reserved for disabled, you need to turn to Social Services in your town again and apply through them, once you have received your certificate with the accredited disability. Please note that they will only made available to those with disability over 33% and even then, only if your mobility is seriously affected by your handicap.

For those whose life expectancy is such that they cannot humanely be expected to go through the whole process of accreditation of disability there is a ´shortcut´ to obtain a disability parking badge. More info HERE.
