Press Release with new preventive measures adopted by the DGT as a consequence of COVID19
General Direction of Traffic
Madrid, 03/13/2020
The Directorate General of Traffic, based on the powers assigned to it, has decided this Friday to extend the prevention measures in application of the protocol of action against exposure to COVID 19.
Theoretical and practical exams – for all categories of vehicles – are temporarily suspended until further notice in order to obtain a driving license in all the Provincial Traffic Departments starting Monday, March 16. The measure was already adopted yesterday in the headquarters of the Communities of Madrid, La Rioja and the province of Álava, so today examinations are not being carried out in these regions.
Points awareness and recovery courses were also suspended. Both measures have been taken in common agreement with the president of the National Confederation of Driving Schools (CNAE).
The face-to-face attention to citizens in the provincial and local traffic headquarters will be carried out maintaining essential services, depending on the particular needs of each of the headquarters.
Public service to citizens will continue to be carried out through telephone and telematic assistance, since a significant number of administrative procedures related to vehicles and drivers can be carried out through the organisation’s electronic headquarters and through third-party collaborators, such as shown in the attached table.
CAB Note 20.3.2020. During the State of Alarm, movements will be restricted. But the Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14, 2020, which declares the State of Alarm, imposes that “terms are suspended and deadlines for processing procedures of public sector entities are interrupted . The calculation of the terms will be resumed at the moment the present royal decree or, where appropriate, its extensions, no longer applies. ” This suspension of administrative deadlines is what should allow you to drive with your license if it has expired during the State of Alarm. This is still to be confirmed by DGT Tráfico.
Finally, it has been decided to lift restrictions on the movement of goods transport vehicles from March 14 to 28, which can be extended depending on the evolution of the situation, as a measure to guarantee the supply of essential goods and supply to cities.
The DGT annually establishes movement restrictions for this type of vehicle for reasons of road safety, mobility and fluidity during weekends and days of special traffic operations.
The measure has been adopted in coordination with the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda and has been disclosed to transport associations.
