Unmarked Police Cars - How To Identify Them?

Posted in: On The Road
Author: Richelle de Wit

To be certain that an unmarked vehicle indicates you to stop when you are driving your car is genuine and you are not the target of thugs impersonating police officers, a couple of tips.

– Key point in identifying a Guardia Civil Trafico car – the matrix sign in front and at the rear indicating alternatively GUARDIA CIVIL – TRAFICO – ALTO  accompanied by flashing blue lighting

– the officers will be wearing high visibility uniforms

Naturally, other police departments will also make use of unmarked vehicles, and they will not be wearing the same, if any, uniforms. Important to know however that ONLY Trafico officers can issue and receive payment of fines, so in case another police department is involved, they will always ask for the assistance of a Guardia Civil Trafico officer in case a fine needs to be issued and paid.

And remember, only non-residents can be asked to pay a fine on the spot, residents will only receive notification and will be able to pay later, through a method of their choice.

When you are stopped and not 100% sure the officers are genuine, you can call 062 and quote the registration number of the vehicle.
