What Is A Libro De Familia And Can I Obtain A Copy When Lost/stolen?

Posted in: Family
Author: Richelle de Wit

The Spanish ´Libro de Familia´ is a booklet, issued by the Spanish Civil Registers when you marry in Spain or when you go to register the birth of baby born in Spain. Personal data of the couple and the baby will be included, as well as a reference to the exact location of the child´s birth registration in the town´s Registro Civil. You need this reference when you want to order a copy of his/her birth certificate.

Once issued, the Libro will be updated with further children born, official date of divorce, dates of death etc.

If you need a copy of the Libro de Familia because you lost it, it got stolen, or just deteriorated, you can order one from the same Registro Civil that issued it.  You need to bring valid ID of all the persons mentioned in the booklet.
