NAF stands for Número de Afiliación de Seguridad Social, it is the number that identifies you if you are paying into the social security system. You need it to apply for benefits, to register for public healthcare e.g.

NUSS stands for Número de Usuario de Seguridad Social, it is the number that is on your healthcard if you are a resident and make use of the social security system but have never paid into the system here, e.g. when you have registered an S1 form as pensioner, or when you receive a non-contributive pension.

NUSS is also for beneficiarios/dependants.

NUSS converts into NAF when you start contributing to the social security system.

Where can you find your NAF number?

On your wageslip/nomina, on your Vida Laboral or on your medical card and medical prescriptions.

What to do if you need to accredit your NAF number?

Then you can print off a duplicate registration certificate from the INSS website.
