Baby Born in Spain – What To Arrange For

Very short summary.

    1. Register the newborn with the Registro Civil in person, or through the Hospital Administration. Options nationality info HERE.
    2. Order a Birth Certificate (Literal if needed for passport/residency)
    3. Apply for passport *
    4. Register as resident **
    5. Register the baby on the padrón of your home town
    6. Register the baby with the Seguridad Social
    7. Apply for a healthcard
    8. Arrange for maternity / paternity leave if parent(s) were working while pregnant
    9. Arrange for child benefits/deduction for maternity through Tax Agency – tax allowance for working mothers until child is 3 years old
    10. After maternity leave, you might want to spend more time with the baby and reduce working hours or extend maternity leave. More info HERE and HERE

Note: ** are not essential in all areas (libro de familia instead of passport/residency certificate will suffice as well in some)  but highly recommended steps, to facilitate steps 5, 6 and 7 and to prevent possible hiccups when registering at school, keeping options open re choice of nationality etc.

Social Services at your Town Hall can also help with paperwork to ensure child gets vaccinated e.g. if there´s any delay in obtaining the above.
