Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the stuff of science fiction. It has already crept into our lives, often quietly, modifying what we see online, determining which documents are accepted or rejected, and increasingly playing a role in life-altering decisions made by governments, corporations, and institutions.
While AI can be a valuable tool, the shift toward giving algorithms unchecked authority over systems once managed by humans is cause for concern. It’s time we talk not just about what AI can do, but what happens when it gets it wrong, and no human is left at the controls.
In recent weeks, our charity was issued a warning by a social media platform for sharing what was clearly a sample image of a driving licence used for display purposes only. The system flagged it as a cybersecurity threat. It wasn’t. It was a helpful graphic, showing users what to expect or look for.
This kind of error is not isolated. A police group with just over 300,000 followers was recently taken down from Facebook, likely flagged by an automated system misidentifying its content as inappropriate or dangerous. We’re seeing entire pages disappear, and helpful community posts censored, with no explanation and no route to meaningful appeal. These are the warning tremors, subtle signs of what happens when AI is judge, jury, and executioner.
The push toward automation is framed as progress. Authorities claim AI reduces workload, improves accuracy, and streamlines complex tasks. In theory, it does. But in practice, the human cost of error is often ignored.

What makes these errors dangerous is not just the mistake itself, but the system around it:
People are left without access to benefits, legal status, healthcare, or even their own funds, and the emotional toll is immense. These aren’t just administrative hiccups, they’re life-altering blocks to survival and dignity.
When even police pages and charities are wrongly flagged, it reveals something else: AI doesn’t understand context. It doesn’t distinguish between a genuine threat and a harmless example. It doesn’t know that your driving license graphic was a sample. It doesn’t see intention, it sees pattern, code, and guesswork.
What happens when these AI systems are tasked with identifying “misinformation,” “fraud,” or “non-compliance”? People will be mislabelled. Information will be suppressed. Whole communities may lose access to trusted resources. And, importantly, no one is held accountable.
This creeping automation creates fear. Charities may think twice before posting helpful images or guides. Community groups might stop sharing resources. Citizens begin to self-censor, not because they are doing anything wrong, but because they’re afraid of triggering the system. The result? Vital public information disappears, and vulnerable people lose access to advice, clarity, and support.
We’re not anti-technology. AI can and should be used to assist humans in complex tasks. But it must never be the final decision maker when it comes to:
