The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, highlighted that Spain’s image as a tourist destination has not been prejudiced by the pandemic and tourists want to travel to Spain again.

The minister closed the presentation of the Study on the Positioning of Spain as a Tourist Destination, drawn up by the El Cano Institute and TURESPAÑA, where she reiterated that the Government of Spain is working flat out to receive inbound tourists as soon as possible.

Reyes Maroto stressed that the availability of vaccines and the start of the vaccination campaign in many countries offers a horizon of hope that most people will be immunised and thus in a position to travel safely. “Our priority in 2021 is to reactivate tourist activity and resume safe mobility at a global level as soon as possible. We are working to adopt a foreseeable common framework of action to inspire confidence in tourists and we hope that by the end of the spring and, above all in summer, international travel will resume and inbound tourists will choose Spain”.

During her speech, the minister highlighted that health and safety constitutes an additional barrier to travel, but does not particularly affect Spain as a destination. This is made clear in the study presented on Friday and we are seeing this in the continuous monitoring by TURESPAÑA through other active social listening tools: our image has not been prejudiced by the pandemic and tourists want to travel to Spain again. Spain’s image and positioning as a tourist destination is one of the strengths of the Spain Brand at a global level.

As regards promoting tourism, the Director-General of TURESPAÑA, Miguel Sanz, stated that we want to be identified as a safe destination, to which end we have introduced an informative and promotional campaign “Travel Safe”, which seeks to contribute to the recovery of confidence in tourist activity, informing on the requirements and conditions for safe travel and influencing the purchasing intentions of travellers, encouraging them to opt for safe trips.
