Spain Has a New King

After thirty six years on the Spanish throne. The king Don Juan Carlos Primero de Borbón who announced his abdication earlier this month and was legalised by the senate, signed his abdication on Thursday the 18th of June. Today the 19th of June of 2014 his son. Prince Felipe of Asturias is proclaimed, King Felipe V!. As defined in the Spanish constitution there will be no crowning ceremony. The proclamation is to take place in the Chamber of representatives in Madrid.

The new queen, the princess of Asturias Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano is the first plebeian to ascend to the Spanish throne. Letizia was an acknowledged journalist and news reader until her engagement and marriage to the prince in 2004. The eldest of their two daughters, La infanta Leonor who is only eight years old, today will inherit the title ‘Princess of Asturias’s and is next in line to the throne. Her sister Sofia, will be known as ‘La Infanta Sofia’.
