Amendment to EC Directive Driving Licences – Apnoea and Driving in Tunnels.

New EC Directive EC Directive 2014/85/EU, 1st of July 2014 published last week, informing member states of the necessity to develope legislation dealing with:

A. Driving in tunnels, as the last decade has shown great improvements in safety measures. In order to fully ensure the effectiveness of these improvements, it is necessary to ensure that drivers know and understand the principles of safe driving in tunnels and can apply them in their behaviour in traffic.

B. The obstructive apnoea sleep syndrome, as that appears to be one of the highest risk factors for motor vehicle accidents. Depending on the severity of the syndrome, drivers can be asked to produce a medical certificate stating it is safe for them to drive.

Provisions in National Laws, Regulations and such will have to be made before December 31st 2015 as that is the starting date they will have to be applied in all European member states.

We would like to take this opportunity to make you aware of the quite extensive list of medical conditions that could lead to temporary or permanent invalidity of your driving licence, either as a consequence of the condition itself, or because of the medical prescriptions you are required to take to help you deal with the condition. The complete list is on the dgt website, the Reglamento de Conductores, at the end of the pdf file. http://www.dgt.es/Galerias/seguridad-vial/normativa-legislacion/reglamento-trafico/reglamento_trafico181.pdf .
