The EES…

Border control process

…provides for:

• The automatic registration of nationals from third countries each time they cross an external border of the Schengen area
• The gradual reduction of waiting times at passport controls
• The simplification and automation of border control procedures

…applies to:

• Nationals of third countries who travel for a short stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period
• Travellers  who require a visa
• Travellers who are visa-exempt

(There are some exceptions.)

…collects your:

• Name and surname, date of birth, nationality, sex
• Travel document data
• Facial image and/or fingerprints

(The collection and registration of data will be gradually introduced at border crossing points starting from October 12, 2025, and will be fully applied from April 10, 2026.)

…records:

• The date and place of entry and exit from a country using the EES
• Any entry refusals, where applicable

Border crossing process:

1️⃣ The traveller must present their travel documents to the border guard and…

2️⃣ Also provide biometric data (facial image or fingerprints) that are recorded in the EES.

3️⃣ The border guard checks the traveller’s information, asks questions, and digitally registers the entry into the EES.

4️⃣ The traveller benefits from a smoother and more efficient border-crossing process.
