Update 24/04/2025.

This morning, I received updated advice from the healthcare team regarding individuals who are approaching retirement age and are dependent on a partner or spouse’s S1 for healthcare coverage.

The recommendation is to wait until the day before reaching pensionable age to apply for your own S1. This helps avoid the risk of the INSS (Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social) prematurely cutting off your existing healthcare rights during the 90-day transition period.

You can apply for an S1 up to 90 days before moving to live in an EU country.
