Your driving license is exchangeable if you obtained it before becoming a legal resident in Spain, or if you did so prior to the signing of the agreement.
For permits that only include authorizations for type A and B vehicles (motorcycles, cars and light vehicles) it is not necessary to carry out tests, the exchange is direct.
For the exchange of permits that include authorization to drive type C and D vehicles (trucks and buses) it will normally be necessary to pass a practical test and in some cases also a theoretical one. Check the aptitude tests required for each country when making the exchange.
The exchange will not be possible:
If your country of origin does not appear in the list of countries with an agreement. You will have to obtain a new permit.
The permit you want to exchange was obtained in turn as an exchange from another country with which Spain does not have an agreement.
If you obtained your foreign permit while already a legal resident in Spain.
It will not be possible to exchange permits issued in Venezuela in PDF format because they do not comply with European regulations. Only driving licenses issued at origin on a plastic card will be exchangeable.
Remember that your foreign permit is only valid for driving for a maximum period of six months, counted from when you acquired normal residence in Spain. So you will be obliged to make an exchange if you want to continue driving in our country.
At the time of completing the procedure, the original permit will be withdrawn and a provisional permit will be given to you. Within approximately a month and a half we will send you your final permit by mail.
You can check, electronically, the processing status of your permit.
