Much has been circulating on the internet about the PSOE proposal for universal healthcare. This relates to the promise of the new government to repeal the Decreto Real of 16/2012 and in six weeks to approve a new Royal Decree.
The Royal Decree 16/2012 was approved by the PP which refused healthcare to sections of the society, withdrawing the right to cover for immigrants who were in an irregular situation. They were only entitled to treatment in emergencies, for pregnant women and children under the age of eighteen.
There is no guarantee that this new Decree will cover EU citizens who are subjected to different regulations.
CAB Spain will wait till the vote in parliament and after reading the new regulations and checking if the 2012 law is repealed or modified. We would then be able to prepare a fact sheet.
Again we would like to remind everyone that the regulations on healthcare states that free healthcare is available to all legal residents in Spain. It is the INSS who are not abiding by this law.
