The right for Sephardic Jews who originated in Spain to claim Spanish nationality which had been denied to them for some years has been reinstated. This is by the law 12/2015 24 June.
Spain to correct the injustice of 1492 when the Sephardic Jews were expelled from Spain. Many went to live in Morocco.
Applications may be submitted at any time prior to 0:00 pm on October 1, 2018. However, the Act provides for the possibility that the Council of Ministers may extend this period for another year.
Q) Who can benefit from this law?
The procedure under this Act those Sephardim who originated in Spain proving such condition and a special bond with Spain. Even those who do not have legal residence in Spain (Article1.1) are eligible, subject to the general means for obtaining nationality (citizenship by residence , etc.), which they can also opt for.
Q) And the Sephardim who cannot prove their status as such?
A) No. The condition of Sephardic originating in Spain must be established by evidence means provided in Article 1 2 of the Act.
However both Sephardi Jews as those who cannot prove these conditions or their link with Spain, can still acquireSpanish nationality by any other legally established procedures.
