Due to the steady increase in popularity of the sport of road cycling DGT/Trafico has decided to increase road safety for those road users on specific stretches of ´carreteras convencionales´ i.e. the N-roads that connect one town with another, with usually a relatively narrow hard shoulder.
On these stretches of road that are frequently used by cyclists, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, between 8 and 14 hrs, the max speed will be brought down to 80 km/hr and drivers are reminded about the legally established minimum distance to maintain when overtaking cyclists, which is 1,5 m.
The first one has been placed on the N-630, near Cáceres. More to follow soon, according to DGT/Trafico.
Here is an example of the signs used.
