DGT/Trafico started a campaign in January 2016, actively cross checking their vehicle database with that of the combined Insurance Companies to check for vehicles that are registered as ´road worthy´ but do not have insurance. Sending out notifications to owners to correct the situation before the 1st of April 2016.
By Spanish law, even if you do not use your vehicle and keep it parked on your private property, in your garage for example, or only use it on your private plot, a vehicle must have valid insurance.
The window to comply with this obligation lasts till April 1st this year. The Consortium of Insurance Companies will use this window as well, to get their database as up to date as possible. As of April 1st, when in a cross check a vehicle comes up without valid insurance, DGT/Trafico will not send out a warning, but a fine directly.
Only way out re the insurance obligation would be, if you do not use your vehicle, to arrange for a ´baja temporal´ at DGT/Trafico.
UPDATE 29.11.2016 DGT/Trafico have published that since the campaign started in January this year , a staggering number of appr. 2 million vehicles have been caught driving around without insurance. They now continue the campaign under the slogan ´Very Expensive Insolidarity´. Fines ranging between 600 and 3.500 euros.
