WHO AND WHAT IS AGE CARE, AND WHAT DO THEY DO ?
Age Care is a fully registered charitable association, run entirely by volunteers, whose aim is to help improve the lives of the elderly English speaking community. It is funded solely by the proceeds of the shop in Calahonda and by donations.
Our role is to ensure that the elderly can have access to the health and social care they need, enjoy a sense of well being, and live their lives comfortably, participating and contributing in the community around them. This enables many to stay independent in their own homes as well as enjoying an active social scene, despite many having disabilities.
HOW IS AGE CARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SIMILAR SOUNDING ORGANISATIONS?
Age Care is not just a social gathering organisation. Age Care volunteers are active with driving members to hospital for operations, doctors and consultancy appointments, to clinics for tests, to Social Services for registration and queries, and , of course, to the weekly coffee mornings for the social activities. We have recently opened a Day Centre in Fuengirola, where members can drop in for a chat or join the organised activities such as Spanish, Chair Aerobics, Pilates & Yoga ,Art class, and health checks. Calahonda also has these activities.
Age Care has volunteers who speak directly with doctors and clinics to clarify the appointments, explain the diagnosis and procedures, and re- appoint when necessary. They also speak directly to the Town Hall and Social Services to clarify situations that have arisen and to explain situations to the members.
Age Care has recently become involved with the Dementia and Alzheimers group, organising coffee mornings for the carers and sufferers.
WHAT DID AGE CARE DO FOR PEOPLE DURING THE LOCK-DOWN ?
Age Care organised shopping, prescription renewals, prescription pick-ups, re-arranged hospital and clinic appointments, a twice weekly bulletin was sent out to keep the members updated with all the new decrees, to keep communications going between members, an on-line talk site was opened.
Age Care also arranged for ready cooked meals to be delivered twice a week to those very vulnerable and lonely members. This was later extended to the homeless and deprived families in the area. Age Care was able to do this through the generosity of others.
